FAQ

What are the basics of survival in the wild and what do they teach?

If you live off the soil, you must learn how to build a fire. Not just about lighting a candle, but also how to use friction and fire flint to start a campfire. It is also important to learn how to keep from getting burned by the flames.

You'll need to know how to build shelter from natural materials, such as trees, grasses, leaves, etc. These materials will help you stay warm at night. And finally, you'll need to know how much water you need to survive.

Other Survival Skills

You can do other things to help you stay healthy, but they're not as vital as knowing how light a fire. Even though you can eat many types of animals and plants you won’t be cooking them if the fire doesn’t start.

Also, you will need to be able to identify edible and non-edible food sources. This is important because you could be starving or becoming sick if you don’t know.

How to Navigate with or Without a Compass

A compass is not able to tell you where your destination is, but it can help guide you back home if necessary.

Three different ways you can navigate are available:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using a compass)
  3. By stars

You recognize landmarks when you see them. These include trees, buildings and rivers. Landmarks provide visual clues to where you live.

Magnetic North simply refers to the direction that the Earth's magnet field points. If you look up at a skyline, you will notice that the sun seems to be moving across it. However, the earth's magnetic field actually causes the sun to move around the earth. Even though it seems like the sun is moving across a skyline, it actually moves around horizons. The sun is overhead at noon. At midnight, the sun will be directly below you. The magnetic field on the earth changes daily, so the direction of the North pole's magnetic North pole can change every day. This could mean you can be off-course by quite a bit in one day.

Stars can also be used to navigate. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These are fixed points that can be used to pinpoint your location relative other locations.

What's the difference between a folded knife and a fixed blade knife?

Folding knives fold down compactly so that they can fit into a bag or pocket. When not in use the blade folds away.

Fixed-bladed knives are designed to remain fixed during normal use. They often have longer blades then folding knives.

Fixed-blade knives can be more durable, but they are less portable.

How To

How to Find Edible Animals and Plants during Emergencies

In an emergency situation, edible plants and animal food are essential. They should be included in your survival kit because they can provide nutrients and energy for you without access to normal foods. You may also use them to make medicines and cosmetics.

You must know where the plants are located and what type of climate they like. This knowledge will allow for you to quickly identify the plants. However, it's difficult to learn everything about every plant and animal species at once. Some general rules can be applied to all plants and animals.

For example, if you see a plant or animal growing near water, you can assume it likes moist soil. If the leaves are shiny, this means they have been watered recently. If you notice ants in the vicinity of a plant you can assume it provides nectar for insects. These simple observations can save you valuable time in finding useful plants and animals during emergencies.

For more information on edible plants and animals, consult books written in Botany or Zoology by experts. Talk to rural people and watch documentaries. You don't have to be an expert on animals or plants. Just follow these steps:

  1. You should look for animals and plants that are close to water.
  2. Be aware of the growth patterns of animals and plants.
  3. Learn more about the natural habitats for animals and plants. For example, you can look for places with a particular soil type, climate, or vegetation.
  4. Identify which parts of animals and plants you can eat.
  5. Learn how you can cook both animals and plants.
  6. So that you can get to know wild animals and plants better, try eating them.
  7. When collecting wild animals and plants, be careful. Never pick from endangered species.
  8. You must properly store wild animals and plants. They should be kept away from direct sunlight and kept dry.
  9. After handling wild plants or animals, wash your hands thoroughly.
  10. Before you eat fruits and vegetables, wash them.
  11. If you aren't sure, don't eat raw meat or fish.
