Deaths due to heat

The increasing number of heat-related deaths is a concern for many people all over the world. A new report published in the journal "The Lancet" finds that climate change will make the odds of dying from extreme heat or cold increase eightfold by 2100.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists these numbers are alarming. It is predicted that temperatures will increase by at least doubling if we continue to emit greenhouse gases. The study also predicts that if moderately aggressive efforts are made to control greenhouse gas emissions (a scenario called RCP4.5), more than half of the projected extreme temperature-related deaths could be avoided.

Deaths from Extreme Heat

Multiple studies have shown extreme heat to be the most common cause of death in the U.S., with an increasing number of deaths occurring in the southwest and midwest regions.

These numbers are vital to understand because they could motivate local governments in order to address heat-related issues more aggressively. However, accuracy is a concern. If a death occurs after someone is already deceased, it may be difficult for the authorities to determine whether it was due to heat.

Researchers have used a variety methods to estimate heat-related deaths. They used data on daily temperature and county-level mortality to estimate heat-related deaths in several U.S. counties. These estimates have generally been quite small, ranging from a few hundred to less than a thousand.

They also compared heat-related deaths across different temperatures. This approach has yielded a much higher number of heat-related deaths in regions that are warmer than the average United States temperature range.

This report attempts to give a more complete and accurate estimate of the national problem of excessive heat-related deaths. It uses a regression-based method to determine how many deaths are due to heat.

The first step of the analysis is to determine which counties have experienced excessive heat-related death since 1999. Searching for codes in the International Classification of Diseases that include "heat" allows you to identify the counties where excess heat-related deaths have occurred since 1999. The researchers then calculate the excess deaths due to heat and total deaths in the U.S. This indicator shows how the US death rate is calculated by dividing the attributable amount by the total number excess deaths in that year.

According to the results, 61812 heat-related deaths occur annually in the United States. These deaths can be classified by medical professionals to be heat-related or contribute to a death due to another cause. This includes many conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes. Hot weather increases the risk of developing these diseases, and those over 65 and non-Hispanic Blacks are at greater risk.
